Look at the map of an otherwise-clean activity and you'll sometimes see one glitch: the line shoots kilometres off-course in a single frame, then snaps straight back, as if the recording briefly teleported and returned. That's a GPS spike — one point where the implied speed is impossible both arriving at it and leaving it, while the route on either side is completely plausible. It's a common failure mode when a device loses and reacquires satellite lock mid-recording, especially under tree cover, in a tunnel, or between tall buildings. What actually causes a GPS spike?

How is a GPS spike different from implausible speed?
A spike is one isolated point with clean, plausible track on both sides of it. Implausible speed is a run of several consecutive bad points with no single clean deletion point — a different defect with its own page and fix.
Will removing the spike affect my distance or pace elsewhere in the file?
No. Only the single flagged point is removed; every other point, along with your recorded time and distance, stays exactly as captured.
Does spike detection work on FIT and TCX files, not just GPX?
